The Federal road Safety on Monday said it plans to deploy 240 personnel to check the constantroad traffic crashes and fatalities on Nigeria’s highways.
A statement by the Corps Public Education Officer, Stella Uchegbu, said the FRSC had concluded plans to flag off a nationwide special intervention patrol tagged, ‘Operation Shield IV’.
The special intervention, slated for August 25-29, will help reduce road traffic crash by 15 per cent while fatalities will be decreased by 25 per cent by the end of 2014, Ms. Uchegbu said.
The exercise, she said, would be sustained by the FRSC in view of the need to deliver on its mandate of delivering safer roads and fuller lives to all Nigerian road users.
She said the personnel would be deployed to various states with 43 patrol vehicles, 7 ambulances and 4 heavy duty tow trucks.
She said the Corp operatives will cover corridor 1, Kaduna-Abuja-Okene highway and would be stationed at Abaji Unit Command as operational base while operatives for corridor 2, Lagos-Ibadan highway will operate from Mowe Unit Command.
She also said the Edo Sector Command, Benin will serve as operational base for corridor 3 (Benin-Asaba highway) with strict enforcement of traffic rules and regulations. The base will be intertwined with robust public enlightenment campaigns.
She noted that the focus of the exercise is on speed limit violation, lane violation and overloading in addition to other road vices.
“Operation Shield which has entered its 4th version is designed with the primary aim of shielding road users from the incidence of road crashes which has been witnessed recently along specific routes of the highways,” Ms Uchegbu said.
Identifying the attitude of most motorists as a major factor for road crashes, Ms. Uchegbu called for behavioural change among Nigerian drivers.
