Lagos State Vocational Rehabilitation Centre for Persons with Disabilities, Owutu, Lagos, has witnessed a beautiful wedding of 2 handicapped people.
The couple, 20-year-old Simiat Abiola and 42-year-old Dare Akinyemi, tied the knot with the assistance of Baptist pastor at the ceremony attended by numerous guests and the officials of Lagos Office of Youth and Social Development.
Akinyemi’s condition causes speech impairment and low IQ level, while his wife also has low IQ and cannot write own name despite training for several years.
The marriages of such special couples are not often held at the centre, that is why it is a big event for all those who came to celebrate love.
The centre head, Folusho Adeolu, commented on the specifics of their institution saying they take care of children with special needs since 1997.
She spoke about the newly-weds:
“The bride and groom are not like other children. Simiat, I was told, was fostered at Idi-Araba by a woman who later died before she was brought here. She went through school up to JSS but cannot write her name because of her condition. One of our ex-trainees took interest in her. He also has speech impairment. We did all the proper wedding for them, from traditional wedding to church wedding. A Baptist pastor came here to wed them.”
The groom’s sister took responsibility to help the young couple due to the vulnerability caused by their condition. According to Adeolu, the two will live together but close to the house of the husband’s sister. The centre principal added:
“The groom learnt shoe making from our centre, so he is going to fend for his wife.”
Adeolu explained that their further goal is to help the couple get integrated in to the society so they could take the whole from their marital life.
We want to sincerely congratulate Simiat Abiola and Dare Akinyemi on the joyful event and wish them many happy years together!
